As some members may recall, some time back, a Danish journalist, Bo Østlund, was asking for contributors to a book about Danes who had emigrated to the US. The book has now been published, and it is available from Danish booksellers. It contains 150 stories about individuals who crossed the pond and found a new life in the US. At least two of the stories are about members of the Danish Club of Houston. One of them, Jens Chistoffersen, has written a review of "For Enden af Regnbuen?" ( "At The End Of The Rainbow") It shall be noted that the book is written in Danish only.
October 28th's Cook-out and Viking Cup at The Norwegian Seamen's Church turned out to be very successful for the Danish colors. The barbeque team, with Jan Mogensen, Mike Miller and Jeppe Sorensen took first price for their moist and tender chicken, and they also received a big trophy for being runner-up in the brisket category, the most prestigious cook-out category. A total of eight teams participated in the cook-out.

Our soccer team played great and took home the Viking Ship trophy for the first time. Norway started out beating Sweden by 2-0, whereafter the strong Danish team beat the Swedes 3-0. The final started out as a very intense game with tight marking from both sides. The Danes scored first, and the Norwegians evened the score on a very nice goal. Thereafter the Danish team proved the strongest and took command of the game, and scored three more goals to the final result 4-1. See another picture of the team

For the 2nd year in a row, the "Danish Dynamite" soccer team, sponsored by Danish Inspirations took the honorable 2nd place in The Viking Cup soccer tournament held at the Norwegian Seamen's Church on October 17. The Danish team beat the Swedes 3-0, but were defeated by the Norwegians by a score which can not be published as it has been deemed "not fit for general audiences" by higher authorities.
At the BBQ cook-off which was held in conjuction with the tournament, the Danish Club sponsored "Danish Deep Friars" won the 2nd place honors in the chicken category.See pictures.
About 50 members of the Danish Club attended the September 13 concert with Victor Borge and the Houston Symphony. It turned out to be a delightful evening with Borge being at his best. To the amazement and delight of many, Borge this time played all the way through many of the classical pieces, and we got to hear what a brilliant musician he really is. Luckily, he did not spare us from is classic comedy routines either. He both fell off his stool, gave the First Violin his marching orders and told lots of jokes. To me, the highlight of the evening was when he played a medley of Danish folk songs. It was beautiful. Incidently, he dedicated this piece to the Danish Club.
After the concert, members had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Borge at a reception at the Lancaster Hotel. Here, he again delighted his audience with his humor. When Consul Ray Daugbjerg excused himself for his limited Danish speaking abilities, Borge replied: "But that's good, then we won't have to listen to a long boring speech!". See pictures

Many Danes have made their marks on Texas' History throughout the years. Jesper Lindquist has made me aware of a great source for some om the stories about those Danes:
"The Handbook of Texas Online" is an encyclopedia over the History of Texas: Here you can, for example, read about the Dane with the unlikely Danish name Charles Zanco who fell at the Alamo with Davy Crocket and co. during the famous battle.

From Marianne Meyer of the Danish Trade Office:
The Trade Commission of Denmark has received a beautiful framed photograph of Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen, from the Houston photographer, Tom Williamson.
Tom Travels to Denmark regularly, and I highly recommend that you arrange to view the photos that he has taken in Denmark. I first saw his work during the photo fest. You can contact him at 713-960-8993.
